Glendale Community College issued the following announcement on Feb. 4.
Alek was awarded GCC’s STEM Scale Scholarship and has since then discovered his skills, capabilities and drive. After graduating from high school, Alek had intended to attend trade school for fashion design. At GCC though, he was inspired to switch his focus to his true passion: medical studies.
It was Rico Moran at GCC that first showed Alek all of the opportunities and possibilities that were available to him. Rico was his first real introduction to GCC and that he did a great job of creating excitement and interest.
Soon after starting at GCC, Alek learned he was a recipient of a President's Scholarship. Then he got involved in many of GCC’s campus activities like the Associated Student Government, PTK, and Student Honors Retreat. And if that wasn’t enough, he met great people on campus.
Faculty, Julie Waskow had a profound impact on Alek and became a tremendous influence in his life and plans for the future. “She has a brilliant way of teaching,” he said. “Plus, she was happy to take time to meet one-on-one, much like all of my faculty at GCC.” Dr. Waskow inspired him to want to help a greater segment of the population and set his long-term goals on being an OBGYN.
This second-generation Gaucho (Alek’s mother attended GCC) plans to attend ASU West and working toward a master’s degree in Bio-Medical Systematics. His next goal will be to attend Medical School at the University of Arizona.
